Mosquito

Utah mosquitoes swarm near water from late spring to fall, with some species spreading West Nile virus and making repellents and dusk-to-dawn protection important.

Identification

Mosquitoes are common warm-season pests throughout Utah. These small, flying insects have slender bodies, long legs, and a long proboscis used for biting. Only females bite, feeding on blood so they can lay eggs. They are most active from late spring through early fall, especially at dawn and dusk, and are often found near standing water such as ponds, ditches, birdbaths, and clogged gutters. In addition to causing itchy bites, some species in Utah can spread illnesses like West Nile virus.

Elimination

Reducing mosquito numbers starts with removing their breeding sites and targeting adults where they rest. Empty and scrub standing water in containers like buckets, plant saucers, and kiddie pools at least once a week. Clear clogged gutters and drains so water doesn’t sit long enough for eggs to hatch. Use outdoor fans on patios to make the area less attractive to mosquitoes, and apply labeled mosquito treatments to shady vegetation, fences, and other resting spots. For heavy infestations or season‑long relief, consider professional mosquito control services.

Prevention

Long-term mosquito prevention in Utah focuses on managing moisture and limiting shelter. Repair leaky spigots, hoses, and irrigation lines that create puddles, and maintain pools, ponds, and water features so water circulates or is treated with mosquito dunks. Keep grass cut and trim dense shrubs where mosquitoes like to hide during the day. Install or repair window and door screens to keep them outside. When spending time outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk, use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants to reduce the chance of bites.
